Will Amrita Rao stand up to Tabu?

Amrita Rao’s simple, cute and innocent look has helped her to carve a niche for herself her own unique way in B-Town.

She hasn’t gone overtly sexy yet has happily done her own thing and has shone in varied roles in ‘Main Hoon Na’, ‘Vivaah’, ‘Welcome to Sajjanpur’ and ‘Victory’.

Now she’s getting ready for the big one-Chadraprakash Dwivedi’s upcoming period film ‘The Legend Of Kunala’.

In October it was reported that Jaya Bachchan was impressed by Amrita’s docile image and recommended her name.

The film will be produced by the revived production company Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL) which after major losses many years ago wants to start the year with a blockbuster.

Amitabh Bachchan is set to play the role of Emperor Ashoka. Arjun Rampal will in all probability play the role of King Kunala. And Tabu will be seen as the Emperor’s wife.

It was reported that Tabu’s character is very strong and suffers from sexual deprivation. And there’s a lot of sexual tension between her and her step son Kunala.

That way Amrita’s role of princess Kanchanmala, the wife of Kunala is very important. According to Dwivedi, he wanted an actress who could stand up to Tabu and Amrita being a good actress fitted the bill perfectly.

As the story centers on Arjun Rampal’s character, Amrita who will play his wife is expected to have a good share of screen time. It’s rare for actresses to grab a good role in a period film which has a bunch of acclaimed actors. This seems like a unique opportunity for Amrita.

The actress thinks that the role of a pure and calm girl will prove to be a turning point in her career. She seems to be fully confident about the film doing well and the high hopes seem natural.

Amrita is preparing for the role and is going through ancient history books about the rule of Emperor Ashoka and the life at that time.

Well after the homework and preparations of that kind, she’s likely to stand out in the crowd yet again.

Amrita Rao talks about working with first time directors

Amrita Rao has worked with many established film makers in the past. Sooraj Barjatya (VIVAAH), Rajkumar Santoshi (THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH), Raj Kanwar (AB KE BARAS), Indra Kumar (MASTI, PYAARE MOHAN) and Shyam Benegal (WELCOME TO SAJJAPUR) are some of the top names that she has been associated with. However, when it comes to working in a film that is being helmed by first timers, they have been far and few.

In the past there have been two such film makers – Ken Ghosh (ISHQ VISHK) and Farah Khan (MAIN HOON NAA). Both the films were quite successful at the box office. And now she returns with Ajitpal Mangat for VICTORY. One is immediately led to ask her about the criteria that she sets for herself before giving a go ahead to a project with a first time director?

Tabu & Big B Are All Set To Create History

Though they belong to totally different generations and have done a generation-challenged and challenging love story together, fate seems to have bonded Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu is an strange an inextricable clasp.

After doing Cheeni Kam a completely contemporary take on marriage and gender equations, the Big B and Tabu now go back to several centuries for a film on the life of Emperor Ashoka.

Entitled The Legend Of Kunal the film is to be directed by Chandraprakash Diwedi. It will be produced by Mr Bachchan’s company AB Corp Ltd

What comes as a surprise is to know that the progressively-reclusive Hyderabad-based Tabu has finally given the nod to a film after almost a year, her first since Balki’s Cheeni Kam which was not an easy project to go through for either the actress or the crew.

Chandraprakash Diwedi, completely consumed by scripting 52 episodes of the Upanishad for television, laughs off the rumours of problems between the Cheeni Kam pair.

“Tabu had not a moment’s hesitation in saying yes to the role of Emperor Ashok’s powerful wife Tishyarakshitra, so powerful she swayed the entire Mauryan empire with her politics and aura. We needed an actress with the strength of conviction.”

Interestingly when Raj Kumar Santoshi was planning a film on Emperor Ashoka he had cast Ajay Devgan and Bipasha Basu in the two roles. Santoshi abandoned the idea.

Says Dr Diwedi, “History and its cinematic treatment demand the characters to be true to their antecedents. And Emperor Ashoka who’s caught in his twilight years in my film had to be played by Bachchan Saab. Only he possesses the gravity sobriety and personality along with being the age required.

I wouldn’t make Ashoka without him. As for Tabu, she plays his young fiery assertive wife. She’s an actress I’ve wanted to work with for a very long time. Again, only she could play Tishyarakshitra.”

In addition the film will star Arjun Rampal as Emperor Ashoka’s son Kunal and Amrita Rao as Kunal’s wife Kanchamala.

“Again cast because for their suitability rather than saleability, ” says Dr Diwedi. “In fact Amrita was recommended by Mrs Jaya Bachchan. Tabu and Amrita have many dramatic confrontation scenes together. I needed an actress who could hold her own against someone as powerful as Tabu. Amrita is delicate but strong. ”

The director whose last and so far only film was the honorable Partition epic Pinjar is determined to make no compromises with history or with his creativity in making The Legend Of Kunal.

“It’s a big responsibility, not only to history but also to Bachchan Saab who has never in his long and distinguished career played a historical character. Isn’t that ironical?

It’s also a responsibility because after Cheeni Kam, audiences would want to see what has been done with the very unusual and striking pair of Bachchan Saab and Tabu. I can’t afford to slip up.”

Dr Diwedi is just about wrapping up the very complicated process of writing the Upanishad for television which his wife the very talented Mandira will direct.

“I’m now devoting all my time to The Legend Of Kunal. I’ll be accompanying Bachchan Saab to Bodh Gaya in Bihar, the birthplace of Buddha, for a visit. My film deals with those years when the warrior Ashok reforms into a saint. I need to get both Bachchan Saab and myself into the mood.”

Big B, Arjun, Tabu and Amrita in a periodical titled The Legend Of Kunal

Chandraprakash Dwivedi, who is best known for directing the famous TV serial Chanakya and the Urmila Matondkar starrer film Pinjar, is busy with his next period flick titled The Legend Of Kunal, which will star Amitabh Bachchan (as King Ashoka), Arjun Rampal (as Kunal, Ashoka’s son) and Tabu (as Pishyarakshita, the fifth wife of Ashoka). The latest entrant to this mega starcast is Amrita Rao, who is all set to play Kanchanmala (Arjun’s wife).

The Legend Of Kunal deals about the sexual strains between Tabu and Arjun Rampal (her step-son). While Tabu plays the character who suffers from sexual despair, Amitabh and Amrita happen to be the silent onlookers. Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Dr. Dwivedi said, ”This film will take you to a journey that purifies your mind and has all the elements like human passion, politics, crime and mystery. Overall, the film tries to capture and portray the conflict of human emotions and mind.”

Talking about his line up of films after The Legend of Kunal, Dwivedi said ”I will be working on Aashadh Ka Ek Din, a story based during 4th century, which also happens to be the period of Kalidas. This film is basically his love story as told by Mohandas. Since I have just acquired its copyrights, the scripting will take place in some days from now. Based on how the story takes shape, its casting will be decided. Let me also add that this is not a big budget movie since the movie will concentrate only on the literary and the love angle of Kalidas. But, this will be a start to finish movie”.
